Mele Kalikimaka

Playing along with the game from the ever lovable and quite beyond redemption (due to his avid dislike of anything Fogel), Mr. DarkoV.

To start off, I shall list my own avid dislike of Christmas music:

Twelve Days of Christmas
- okay I know, it must be against some rule to not like this ditty, but I never remember the proper gift with the corresponding number, except for the partridge, and the golden rings.

Winter Wonderland - ruined it for me when someone came out with Walking Round in Women's Underwear.

Wonderful Christmas Time by Sir Paul - sorry this is just too jumpy/jerky/dumb - and I am tired of it.

Santa Baby - talk about done to a burnt roast and back...

Jingle Cats - or the Jingle Dogs, though I'm kinda partial to the doggies. But cats? Sheesh.

Hard Candy Christmas - Dolly Parton. Sets my teeth on edge with all that syrup

We Three Kings - the Beach Boys version - uck

Now let's list some favorites:

Christmas in Sarajevo - Trans Siberian Orchestra (anything by TSO is uber-doober)

Charlie Brown Christmas

The Rebel Jesus - Jackson Browne (listen here)

Jingle Bells - the jazzy version by James Taylor. Go here and listen to the sample.

River - James Taylor ( same album as above - terrific)

The Christmas Waltz - Frank Sinatra

Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me - Elvis! Yes! Rockabilly for Me (here - middle of page selections) !

Mele Kalikimaka - Jimmy Buffett's version is the best for me, but here is a good link to Brother Bing's version.

Hey, Little Dreidel
- Brave Combo - links to this song on this page.

What are some of your favorites?

How could I have forgotten J. Browne's "The Rebel Jesus"!??!!?
You're dead on, CP. Also, don't we all have a bit of the Yiddish/Jewish in us? Brave Combo's "Little Dreidel" satisfies that little corner. Excellent choice, again.

About Trans Siberian Orchstra? Well, it pulled out of the station without me. For some reason, I never connected. Friends are as enthusiastic as you are about them. Me, I keep waiting for a derailment.
O.K., any more railroad-related comments?

But when the nerves are getting frayed and a calming agent, aside from a spiked Egg Nog, is needed, here's where I go. Luscious and calming.

We Three Kings is a Fave and Joy to the World...

Amy Grant " Breath of Heaven" a very accurate depiction of what it would have been like to be Mary riding into Bethlehem 9 months gone... can you imagine days of riding a dokey that pregnant?uggh!

Adeste Fideles
Ave Maria
Silent Night
GLoria in Excelsis Deo

And, oddly, something we exercised to this past week. I don't know who sings it, or the name of the song, but the last line is "It's spelled Christmas with a capital C!"

I'm sure there are hundreds of other songs I could have listed, but these are enough to tell you that I enjoy the songs from my childhood, learned at church, sung in close harmony.

I wish caroling was still in fashion!

A Merry Christmas to you and your family. I hope you have time off to enjoy them, and create memories for the future!

Personally, I like Jingle Bell Rock, almost every version. Although the opening scene of Lethal Weapon almost ruined it for me.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. I hope yours is great!

Love,

Tod

Check my blog tomorrow -- it will be there. I'm posting it when I get back from midnight Mass.

Best wishes for a joyous Christmas and a wonderful 2008!

Merry Christmas, Miss Pattie, and a Happy New Year!

I'd like to add my vote to Charlie Brown Christmas, and also suggest Brian Setzer's Christmas songs, and anything by Mannheim Steamroller,

Okay, I'm probably going somewhere extremely warm for a very long time for this one but the one song that drives me nuts is "Do You Hear What I Hear?"--any version. It really is a beautiful song but when it gets to the part about a "child shivering in the cold, let us bring him silver and gold" all I can think is: silver and gold??? bring the kid a blanket!

My favorite is Silver Bells because my grandmother used to sing it to me--even when it wasn't Christmas.

Anon- yeah, I know. Silver and gold for a hungry cold kid. Nonsensical.

Jeff- And good wishes to all ya'll!

Kay - thanks for playing, will check over at your place...

Bill - Handel was always too "heavy" for my tastes, but just me.

Tod - Hollywood has a way with screwing with everything, no? Have a wonderful holiday!

Buffs - exercise? Ugh

Hokule'a - I love it when you talk "Hawaiian!"

DarkoV - I bested you, The Man of Music (i.e. Rebel Jesus). Yeah!
