March 2, 1836

When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted, and so far from being a guarantee for the enjoyment of those inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression...

And so it began those many years ago: Texas, the Republic.

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Texans, and to all those folks out there who wished they'd been born a Texan. Shine On!

Well, what do you know, three great things have happened on March second. The birth of the Republic of Texas, the birth of Dr. Seuss, and the birth of my niece. :)

Most of the men at the Alamo were pretty young. Crockett was 50, but Bowie was only 40 and Travis was 26. Sam Houston was 43 at the time.
