Ray Wylie Hubbard is Not PC!

*The 2blowhards have Ray Wylie Hubbard on their minds (is that a great Texan name or what?) today, so I pulled this oldie post out:

One of my favorite Ray Wylie tunes, "Screw You, We're From Texas" - is not a socially acceptable Top 40 Billboard selection. I call it my Cowboy Cracker Rap. I love to roll my windows down at a red light and play it just as loud as the Boy From the Hood's ghetto box that is viciously vibrating the asphalt off the pavement. Usually I just get glared at, but occasionally a sense of humor prevails as we accelerate to the green...

And, this is not in anyway a thumb-of-my-nose to my non-Texan friends. You know I love ya'll!

Here's a music link to Screw You, We're From Texas

SCREW YOU, WE'RE FROM TEXAS

Ray Wylie Hubbard

I got on my cowboy boots, jeans
And Hawaiian shirt, mirrored sunglasses
And a mobile phone
I guess I look like some Port Aransas
Dope dealer that's out on bail
Just trying to get home
Well I ain't in jail and I got me a guitar
Got a little band that's hotter than a rocket
Sometimes we're sloppy
We're always loud, tonight we're just ornery
And locked in the pocket

So screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas baby, so screw you

Now I love the USA
And the other states
Ahh, they're OK
Texas is the place I wanna be
And I don't care if I ever go to Delaware anyway
Cause we got Stubbs, and Gruene Hall and Antone's, and John T's
Country Store
We've got Willie and Jacky Jack, Robert Earl, Pat, Cory, Charlie and me
And so many more.

So screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas, screw you

Sing it with me--
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas, screw you!

Now Texas has gotten a bad reputation,
Because of what happened in Dallas and Waco
And our corporations well they are corrupt
And the politicians are swindlers and loco
But when it comes to music my friend
I believe these words are as true as St. John the Revelator's
Our Mr. Vaughan was the best that there ever was
And no band was cooler than the 13th Floor Elevators.

So screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas, screw you!

Now don't take this wrong CP, I'm not a troll, but would you elaborate on why you like these lyrics so much?

I am from Texas, also, but I don't get the appeal. To me it seems to be saying "i'm better than you" in a particulary belligerent and aqgressive way.

Or is it supposed to be satirical or something? What is the message? I am just curious.

And I have to add that I tend to dislike songs that try to "borrow" appeal by associating themselves with other singers and songs that a person might like. As if they can't quite cut it on their own merit.

Bill,

I suppose the lyrics are much more compelling when it's Saturday night, and you've had a few too many Shiners under your belt. ;-)

Yeah, I guess the song is "in your face rude". But, sometimes an esprit de corps comes over me and those words just fit my mood.

You talkin' 'bout Ray Wylie, or ?

Oh well, perhaps I am too much the party-pooper.
