Cinch Yer Belt, Texans

This Star-Telegram article and this one in the Texas Observer have gotten my Lone Star blood a'boilin'.

"While the state budget has grown 42 percent under Gov. Rick Perry's tenure, the budget for parks has gone down. And Perry recently asked all state agencies to submit spending plans for the upcoming two-year budget cycle that include additional cuts of 10 percent.

"The parks department, like other agencies, has had to tighten its belt," said Kathy Walt, a spokeswoman for Perry. She said that to save money, the agency may want to consider divesting itself of additional parkland."

Oh really. How do you tighten a belt around a skeleton?

Now, I know that Edward Abbey had some fine words to say about Industrialized Tourism, but without good stewardship and a budget to match, our state parks are doomed. The parks will go to hell, tourists will stop coming and paying park fees, and the land will get sold off to big developers who have the Texas Legislature and the likes of Pretty Hair Boy, Rick Perry, in their pockets.

Sickening, just sickening.

Kinky, are you listening to me?
