Canyon Trip Photos

You can just barely make out the moon that was still up on the morning these two photos were taken at Caprock Canyon State Park.

The deep red sandstone of the canyons is ribboned with shale and white gypsum. Actually looks more like quartz to me. Maybe someone can tell me the difference. Big chunks of it were all along a dry creek bed just below this escarpment.

Great photos. Fascinating to see the rock strata.

Quartz is silicate (Silicon dioxide).

gypsum is Calcium sulphate dihydride.

Actually, you can tell the difference in how it breaks if I remember correctly. Quartz breaks in uniform pieces and gypsum tends to be powdery.
