Euday Bowman sold the rights to "Twelfth Street Rag" for $100 bucks, one of the most successful ragtime tunes ever composed and later performed by more well-known performers like Duke Ellington and Pee Wee Hunt. He did manage to regain the copyright many years later, but never recouped any of the royalties during those "lost" years.
If you've ever seen the movie, "The Sting", you will definitely recognize the tune though it's not the signature theme song.

"He was the last of the early Ragtime composers. It seems strange that Scott Joplin, the composer of the Maple Leaf Rag and Euday Bowman, composer of Twelfth Street Rag, should both be born in Texas. Joplin was born at Texarkana, Texas, in 1868." - S. Brun Campbell
Euday Bowman is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Fort Worth on the city's northside.

I share your affinity for cemeteries, and only recently discovered that ragtime tunes are handled and catalogued with the care one normally exercises with antique collectibles. I wish we had been able to hear more at this festival we "attended" recently.
