Happy Mother's Day to all the women in my past and present life who have contributed so much to who I am. Without them, existence would be impossible. Descended from stout and hardy Germans, determined and adventurous Frenchwomen, and hard-scrabble farm wives, I owe much to them and my own unique mother.
