Those Ugly Americans

I highly recommend taking the time to read this great essay on America and our jealous neighbors in the global community. Thanks to 2 Blowhards for the link. Sometimes, I think we Americans are harder on ourselves than is necessary. Yes, there is always room for improvement, but as a whole, I am proud of my country, and my fellow Americans.

Interesting article. As a Canadian, I think it is very sad (and outrageous really) that so many other countries seem to be anti-American... unfortunately there are many who believe that a stereotypical "American" exists... just as many believe that there is one "Muslim" person, one "Jew" or one "Black" person... it feels weird to be so discriminated against, eh? I know tons of great Americans, (heck I have some American relatives!)... I think one thing that article really got right was the power of the media, not just in Western Europe, but everywhere... to mold these assumptions we have about each other and our perceptions about reality and what is "right"... I remember when the war against Iraq started... my sister in California was so pro-Bush I was genuinely shocked... and actually my mom was too, and then I found out that my mom, here in Canada was only watching CNN news. Meanwhile, I was watching CBC, our Canadian main news channel which was showing a very different story - that many countries were against the Iraq war... but my sister in California never even realized that others, outside the US, saw things very differently... anyway, my eternal optimism always keeps hoping world relations can improve - if only all of our countries have the will...
