Sweet Mystery of Life

A First Born Son

Yesterday, my grandmother passed away. Yesterday, my dad, her firstborn son, would have turned 75. Yesterday, I celebrated two different kinds of birthdays; for isn't death a sort of rebirth? Not the fundamentalist Christian version, more of a different phase in the continuance of life?

"There is a time to live, there is a time to die,
there is a time to let go, a time to allow to be,
and a time to remember. "

No one person has the answers to all the whys of life, each of us must find our own way to make peace with the reality of death and the passing of loved ones. Is there a Heaven? Do we meet our families and friends again "on the other side?" I don't know. The concept is so tangled up in dogmas, so impossible to be defined. Just at the point where I have logically accepted that our existence is finite and singular, the synchronicity of life awakens an ancient memory within me. My grandmother dies on the same day she brought a new life into the world a scant 75 years ago. Did her heart remember, did the special bond between a mother and child play a part?

"The curious timing of the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth are plain for me to see, etched in granite and in the chubby cheeks of my progeny."

Happy Birthday, Daddy. Happy Rebirth Day, Grandmother. I love you both.

Of course, you are right - life, including death, is the greatest of all mysteries. The day turns, the cycle moves on and we are left to wonder. My deepest sympathy, Pattie.
