First Seaman, Flipper

This Memorial Day, America remembers fallen soldiers, as we should. But, did you know there are other heroes to whom we owe gratitude?

The canine division of any inner city PD is indispensable. There is a solid bond between officer and dog that is special. Officers go out of their way to protect their four-legged partners. This consideration of animal rights is not as common in our armed forces. Yes, the Iraqi prisoner abuse is horrible, but so is the treatment of some animals in certain divisions of our military. Some would think it silly to consider an animal's dignity or rights. I am sure the Navy believes its dolphin/seal program is beyond reproach. Perhaps some good does come about from informative research on marine animals, but it is self-serving.

Mankind has benefitted immeasureably through the ages from the servitude of animals. I understand the wartime use of animals can prevent unnecessary human casualties , but we shouldn't take their sacrifices for granted.

So, when you stop and salute the flag to honor our brave men and women, take a moment to say thanks to the thousands of voiceless patriots who have served just as faithfully.
